Semi-arid valley country southeast of Harar, protected for its resident elephant population.
Situated between Oromia and the Somali Regional State, Babile Elephant Sanctuary covers an area of about 6,982 square kilometres and is a significant destination for wildlife watchers. The sanctuary lies roughly 35km southeast of Harar.
It was established for the protection of the elephant, but this semi-arid environment is also a habitat for several other mammals, including the black-maned lion, greater and lesser kudu, wild ass and many smaller species.
Sanctuary entry permits and conservation fees are covered, and an expert wildlife tracker, a local sanctuary ranger and an armed wildlife protection scout accompany you.
The core of the visit is tracking the resident elephant herds on game drives through the valley, followed by a guided walk along the Erer River valley for the landscape and the smaller arid-zone wildlife.
